UNDERSTANDING CANCER
It is important to know everything possible about cancer when fighting it. Cancer occurs when abnormal cells (out of control) develop in the body and continuously reproduce. There is no known clear cause of cancer, but excessive exposure to carcinogens (hormones, viruses, pollutants, radiation, smoking, alcohol) are known to change the DNA structure (mutations) in our cells and play a part in cancer development.
In most forms of cancer, the abnormal cells will clump together and form a growth (or lump). From here the cancer cells spread out into the body and start attacking healthy cells. To cure cancer, these abnormal cells must be completely eradicated. There are several ways of doing this, and one of the most common and effective way is chemotherapy.
HOW CHEMOTHERAPY FIGHTS CANCER
Chemotherapy is a powerful medication administered through drips or tablets to eradicate cancer cells from the body. While effective, chemotherapy can be tough on patients because of its side effects on the normal cells.
At Forest Park Specialised Hospital, chemotherapy is administered by trained nurses under doctor’s supervision. Our oncology team always works with patients to explore a variety of treatment and determine the best one for them.
- Treatment includes surgery, chemotherapy, bio-therapy and hormonal therapy.
- Insertion of Port-A catheter (Chemotherapy catheter)
